August 16, 1977 – Elvis Presley

August 16, 1977 – Elvis had played racquetball in his new court at Graceland and stayed up late singing with his friends as usual. Later, Ginger, Elvis’ girlfriend made a frantic call downstairs for help. She had found Elvis lifeless in the bathroom. Elvis is rushed to the hospital but resuscitation attempts fail and he is pronounced dead at 3:30 pm local time. While it is true that there were drugs in his system, it wasn’t an overdose. His heart failed him. Elvis died aged 42. #ROCkabillyHop #RocHop @ElvisPresley #Elvis #theKing

August 16, 1957 – Buddy Holly and The Crickets

August 16, 1957 – Buddy Holly and The Crickets Perform at the Apollo Theater. This was the first show of a six-night engagement at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. They were booked due to confusion with a black group (led by Dean Barlow) that was also called The Crickets. While Elvis made black music more acceptable to white audiences, Holly won over an all-black audience when the Crickets were booked at New York’s Apollo Theater for August 16–22, 1957. Unlike the immediate response shown in the 1978 movie The Buddy Holly Story, it took several performances for the audience to warm to him. @BuddyHolly @BuddyHollyCtr #ROCkabillyHop #RocHop #BuddyHolly #TheCrickets #ApolloTheater
